Vastu compass

The eight zones, with your own four directions marked on the dial — because a Kua number is no use until you can find those directions in an actual room. It also tells you which north it is reading, which no compass app does.

Take a reading

Hold the phone flat, top edge pointing the way you are facing, and turn slowly in a full circle first — that is what calibrates a magnetometer.

Stay away from steel almirahs, fridges, switchboards and concrete pillars. A magnetometer is a few pounds of sensor sitting next to a battery and a speaker magnet, and metal pulls it by tens of degrees.

Point your phone, or type the degrees from a compass.

What is established and what is not. The eight zones, their Sanskrit names, their deities and their elements are in the texts. What should be placed in each one is a prescription that varies with the plot, the family and the chart — the line above is the common one, not the only one.

Which north, and why it matters

There are two norths and they are not in the same place. True north is the pole; magnetic north is where a needle actually points, and the angle between them — the declination — depends on where you are standing and drifts from year to year. In Pakistan and India it is currently a degree or two. In parts of the world it is more than twenty.

iPhones report true north, corrected using your location.Android's absolute orientation reports magnetic north. The same phone in the same hand gives two different numbers depending on the make, and no compass app mentions it. This page prints which one you are looking at.

Practitioners differ on which a chart should be set from. That is a real question with a real answer for whoever you work with — it is simply not a question a web page can settle for you.

What a phone compass is worth

A magnetometer costs a few pounds and sits inside a metal case beside a battery and a speaker magnet. Calibrated and in open air it is good to a few degrees. Beside a steel almirah, a fridge or a reinforced pillar it can be out by tens of degrees — and in a house, that is usually exactly where you are standing.

So this page tells you when a reading sits near the boundary between two sectors, because that is precisely where a few degrees changes the answer. For anything you are going to move furniture over, take the reading with a proper compass and type the degrees in here.

Your four directions, on the dial

Enter a date of birth and the four directions from your Kua number are marked in gold on the rose, with the one you are facing outlined. That is the whole point of the page: a list of four compass directions is not actionable until you can stand in a room and see which wall is which.

Which of those four is Sheng Chi and which is Tien Yi is still not carried here, for the same reason it is not carried on the Kua page.

Where things should actually go, once you know which way the room faces.

That part is a reading, and it is given by a person — Lubna Faraz, who practises numerology, vastu and palmistry. The calculators here stay free; nothing is held back behind it.

What this page is. It reads a bearing and names the sector it falls in. It does not survey a building, and a phone is not a surveyor's compass. What should be done about a direction is a practitioner's judgement. Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice.
